Video games, like most forms of technology over the past 40 years have evolved swiftly, from a few pixels on a screen, video games have evolved into one of the biggest forms of media today with several communities and industries forming around the world with video games at its center. With how much of an impact that video games have it comes as no surprise that video games would affect the culture at our very own Dean College.
Here at Dean, we are home to several student run organizations with various different goals and themes. The Esports club is one such student run organization whose mission is to bring fun and engaging events through both casual and competitive video games to the students of dean. One upcoming event that Esports is hosting in place of their typical biweekly meeting is Retro Game Night on November 14th from 6PM to 9PM in the esports room located at the bottom floor of the campus center in the atrium.

Retro video games are video games that are considered classic and older than the typical modern video game that are known to invoke nostalgia in players. Some examples of retro video games would be games like Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Pacman are prime examples of classic retro video games. This sense of nostalgia is exactly what Esports is hoping to bring to its members on the 14th by having several retro video games available for students to play to give them a chance to enjoy themselves and de-stress from their classes by playing video games.
While many of the club members come to Esports for such events, that is not all that the club offers for its members. As of me writing this article the Esports club has two active teams that participate in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) competing with other schools who also participate in the league. One of the games that Esports has a team actively playing in the NECC are Overwatch 2, a popular team-based shooter where two teams compete against one another to complete a certain objective to win the game. Another team competes in an incredibly famous platform fighter called Super Smash bros. Ultimate, which has each member of the team take on their opponent in a 1-on-1 match with its members until only 1 team has members remaining.
At the end of my interview with Co-president Liana Littell she had this to say about how her time as a board member has impacted her personally, "I feel my time with esports has taught me to grow learn and keep an open mind. it has truly taught me to figure out how to cohesively plan as well as keep the open mind have plans don’t go the way originally scheduled and to be able to bounce back and figure out another solution."
